State

The Lone Star State was named after a Caddo Indian word meaning “friends.” The Republic of Texas was annexed into the United States in 1845 touching off the “War with Mexico.” Texas emerged a formidable power during the early 1900’s with the discovery of oil. Today, Texas is the fastest growing state, second only to California in total population and tourism. Governor Rick Perry (R), (512) 463-2000, convenes the Texas legislature’s 181 members in January of odd-numbered years. The Wichita Falls’ area is served by the Honorable State Senator Craig Estes, who has an office in Wichita Falls, (940) 689-0191; the Honorable State Representative for District 69, David Farabee, who also has an office in Wichita Falls, (940) 322-4122; and the Honorable State Representative District 68, Rick Hardcastle, who can be contacted at his Austin, Texas office, (512) 463-0526.

County

All 254 counties in Texas are governed by a Commissioner’s Court that consists of four (4) Commissioners. Each County Commissioner is elected by precinct and the County Judge (who presides over the Court) is elected at-large. Wichita Falls is the County Seat. Other cities in Wichita County include: Burkburnett, Iowa Park, Electra, Kamay, Pleasant Valley, and Cashion Community.

City

The City of Wichita Falls is a "Home Rule" city under the City's charter that was passed in 1920. The City operates under the Council-Manager form of local government. Wichita Falls has a Mayor that is elected at large, six Councilmen, and a City Manager. Three of the city Councilmen are elected in a rotating sequence every two years, while one councilman is elected at-large. The City Council conducts their business on the first and third Tuesday of every month. The City's credit rating is A-1 (Moody's) and AA from S&P.
